When a tsunami-like wall crashed into the city of Toowoomba, Australia the lives of its people would forever be changed. This horrible flood killed more than twenty people, and left even more missing. Unfortunately this natural disaster got the better of this city when it arrived earlier in January, leaving houses hundreds of feet away from the original foundation.
Reportedly there was a wall of water about six to ten feet tall that rushed through Toowoomba and left nothing in its tracks. One man said when he saw the giant wall of water he immediately evacuated his car and ran on foot to higher ground. As he stood above the street he watch his car turn to nothing but sheet metal, and quickly it was gone. Another man said, “You were powerless to do a thing,” the feelings similar to many of the residents. Although the most impactful quote from this disaster was from a Toowoomba council member Joe Ramia when he said, “there was water coming down everywhere in biblical proportions.” The impact that this had is a life long process to overcome.
The first thing that came to my head when I heard about this was our flood in the spring. It was devastating for me to watch as many of my friend’s homes were destroyed and there was nothing that I could do to help. That experience helps me to relate or at least try to understand the difficult situation, which the Australian people are going through right now.
